DAY ONE | THURSDAY, JULY 15
WELCOME TO THE ROCK
The final chapter of our Americana Trilogy begins as we leave Charlotte and fly south to Key West, where the road ends and island life begins.. Depending on our arrival time, our first taste of “The Rock” may be lunch at Schooner Wharf Bar—a wonderfully unpolished piece of Old Key West overlooking the historic harbor.
From there, we’ll make our way to our boutique hotel in the heart of Old Town, with time to settle in before gathering again for the evening. Surrounded by the flavors, stories, and easy rhythm of the island, we’ll raise a glass to the days ahead—and begin discovering why generations of writers, musicians, artists, and adventurers have been drawn here.
DAY TWO | FRIDAY, JULY 16
THE STORIES AND SOUNDS OF THE ROCK
After breakfast, we’ll meet our Key West host, Grisel Padrón, whose own family history reaches from Cuba to the island she calls home. Through Grisel’s stories and personal connections, we’ll explore Old Town and discover how generations of Cubans, Bahamians, cigar makers, fishermen, writers, and fiercely independent characters shaped the Key West we know today.
Our day will take us through historic neighborhoods, hidden corners, and some of the island’s most storied places, including the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum and Key West’s remarkable cemetery. Along the way, we’ll share island flavors, unexpected discoveries, and the kinds of conversations that turn history into something personal.
As afternoon gives way to evening, music becomes our guide. The story that began in the studios of Muscle Shoals and carried us through the Southern Rock heritage of Macon now arrives at the end of the road. We’ll follow the music into Captain Tony’s Saloon, Irish Kevin’s, and the smaller, off-the-beaten-path places Grisel knows—listening to local musicians whose songs and stories keep the spirit of “The Rock” alive.
DAY THREE | SATURDAY, JULY 17
BEFORE AND BEYOND MARGARITAVILLE
Long before Jimmy Buffett arrived, Key West already had a soundtrack. During the great cigar-making era of the late 19th century, people, songs, and rhythms moved constantly between Havana and Key West. Cuban musical traditions mingled with the sounds of Bahama Village, African-Caribbean rhythms, church music, jazz, and the songs heard in neighborhood bars, dance halls, and along the working waterfront.
That history produced extraordinary homegrown talent. Key West–born Fats Navarro became one of the defining trumpeters of bebop jazz, while Bahama Village’s beloved pianist and singer Coffee Butler entertained generations of islanders and visitors. This was never one identifiable genre. It was the sound of an island shaped by migration—a meeting place where cultures, stories, and musical traditions continually influenced one another.
For our host, Grisel Padrón, that history is also personal. Her mother was a singer in Cuba, and Grisel carried that musical inheritance into her own life as a singer in South Florida. Through her stories and connections, we’ll experience Key West’s music not as something preserved in the past, but as a living tradition passed from one generation to the next.
When Jimmy Buffett arrived in the early 1970s, he found an island already filled with musicians, sailors, writers, renegades, and remarkable characters. He blended his country and folk roots with rock and Caribbean influences, transforming what he encountered into the sound eventually called “Gulf and Western.” In doing so, he didn’t invent Key West’s spirit—he captured it in songs and introduced it to the world.
Today, we’ll follow that musical line through the neighborhoods, waterfront, historic gathering places, and lesser-known rooms Grisel understands from the inside. As the sun begins to fall, we’ll take to the water for a sunset sail, followed by a final evening of island flavors, music, and stories—a fitting conclusion to our journey through the sounds of America.
DAY FOUR | SUNDAY, JULY 18
THE EPILOGUE
Every meaningful story deserves an epilogue—and ours begins around one final table. We’ll gather for a leisurely farewell brunch at Blue Heaven in historic Bahama Village, joined by a local keeper of Key West’s history who will help us connect the people, cultures, and music we have encountered across “The Rock.”
We came to follow an American story through music. In Muscle Shoals, we discovered what happened when unlikely people entered a room and created one extraordinary sound. In Macon, we followed that sound as it grew louder, bolder, and unmistakably Southern. And in Key West, we heard what happened when music reached the end of the road, absorbed voices carried across the water, and became an expression of freedom, reinvention, and belonging.
After brunch, we’ll visit the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum for one final encounter with a man who understood the power of place—and whose life and work became inseparable from this island. We’ll then return to our hotel, collect our luggage, and transfer to the airport for our afternoon flight to Charlotte.
The destination was never simply three cities. It was the people who made the music, the places that shaped them, and the stories they left behind.
Three cities. Three chapters. One American story—and now, one we carry home together.
