Before Southern Rock became a genre recognized around the world, something extraordinary was happening in Macon, Georgia.

The Allman Brothers Band made Macon home. Capricorn Records was founded there. Musicians, producers, songwriters and road crews converged on this small Southern city and helped create a sound—and a community—that would influence American music for generations.

The story reaches far beyond one band. Otis Redding's career was managed from Macon before Capricorn was born. The label became home to artists including The Allman Brothers Band, The Marshall Tucker Band and Wet Willie, while musicians and producers such as Chuck Leavell and Paul Hornsby became part of a remarkable creative community whose influence continues today.

But we're not coming to Macon simply to look at memorabilia.

Helping us discover the city will be longtime Allman Brothers Business Manager Willie Perkins—a man whose own story could be part of a Southern Rock movie. Willie was a lawyer working for a bank in Atlanta, where one of the clients he represented was Coca-Cola. He could have followed a comfortable and conventional corporate path. Instead, he chose an entirely different one: he went to work with a group of long-haired rock and rollers in Macon who were changing American music.

It turned into quite a ride.

Willie spent years inside the world of The Allman Brothers Band, not observing the story from the outside but helping manage the people, personalities, business and life surrounding one of America's most influential bands. Through Willie, we'll explore Macon with the perspective of someone who didn't read about this history. He lived it.

We'll visit the places where Southern Rock took shape, hear the stories behind the music, share meals and conversations, and meet some of the people who helped create this remarkable chapter of American music.
